American Scouting originated in 1910, just two years after it started in England. The growth of Scouting in the United States was as explosive as in other countries across the world. Just seven years after its start, the BSA claimed over a quarter million youth and adult members. By 1930, it was more than double that, to over 800,000, and by 1950, membership crossed 2.5 million. But the most amazing growth decade of all was the 1950's, when BSA membership hit 5 million boys and adults by the end of 1959. Peak BSA membership was reached in the early 1970s, over 6 million.
Over the past 100 years, Scouting has had a significant impact on American society, not only in shaping leaders, but also positively contributing to the betterment of our country through countless good turn and outreach programs. It has weathered challenges to its core principles, and continues to be a shining example of the best we have to offer to those who will be shaping our future - our youth.
Take a journey through American Scouting over the past hundred years, and learn more about the road it has traveled to where it is today.
